Sources said that a cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched on Tuesday afternoon in Nilphan and Andoo (Kachwan) forest area of Kokernag in Anantnag district. The search operation followed “credible input about the presence of militants in the area,” an official said.

During the search operation, militants opened indiscriminate fire to which forces retaliated, resulting in a gunfight, the official said.

“One of the two militants killed was identified as Faisal Nazir of Naibasti area of Anantnag town, an engineering student,” said an official. He said that Nazir had joined JeM only 45 days before.

“The other militant was identified as Umar Pathan a resident of Pakistan,” he added.

A police spokesperson in a handout said that bodies of two militants were retrieved and their identities and affiliations were being ascertained. “Arms & ammunition have been recovered. A case has been registered,” it added.
