Welcoming the support of President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz in joining the global condemnation of the execution of Afzal Guru, International Council for Human Rights (ICHR) Kashmir project has said that it will continue to throw light on the execution of Afzal Guru and on the fact that the application of the death penalty is unjust and incompatible with fundamental human rights. “It is an affront to the right to life and the right to dignity”.
According to a statement, Majid Tramboo has urged the European Parliament and Martin Schulz, to condemn this execution, and sought his assistance in calling on the Government of India to return the body of Afzal Guru to his wife and family, in order to allow them to perform his final religious rites with dignity.
According to the statement, in response to ICHR’s communication, the president of the European Parliament thanked Barrister Tramboo for bringing this case to his attention.
“…the European Parliament is opposed to the capital punishment in all cases under all circumstances and has consistently called for its universal abolition. We believe that the abolition of death penalty is essential to protect human dignity, and we therefore, very much regret the execution of Afzal Guru” , the ICHR quoted the president of having said.
The President added that the subcommittee on Human Rights in the European Parliament “is paying close attention to any decisions that the Government of India may take in line with the global trend towards the abolition of capital punishment…”
