SRINAGAR: The Handwara Police in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have apprehended a man who was posing as a fake computer engineer and targeting people through social media platforms.
Quoting an official, Kashmir Scroll reported that the accused, identified as Atif Qureshi, had been falsely presenting himself as a computer engineer.
The official said, “The accused initially contacted victims through social media platforms, claiming that their data had been compromised. Presenting himself as a helpful professional, he offered to remove their data from the internet for a fee. Unfortunately, some victims, fearful of exposure, fell into the trap and succumbed to his extortion demands.”
The official said that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law, and he has been taken into custody.
Furthermore, initial investigations reveal that the accused systematically targeted numerous individuals, exploiting their fears to carry out his nefarious activities.
