Snow at least in temporary flurries has started to fall in parts of southern Kashmir and western districts of Pir Panchal range of Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first snowfall of the winter in the habitable areas of the valley.

Reports reaching from Shopian say that it started snowing albeit in temporary flurries mixed with rain since Tuesday morning.

The sight of snowflakes has brought happiness and relief to the people as the valley has been witnessing a long dry spell.

The accumulation of snow at the tourist spot of Pir Ki Gali on Mughal Road has caused the closure of the road. The traffic has been suspended.

Reports from Islamabad said that the area is witnessing rainfall while as snowfall is happening near Jawahar Tunnel on Jammu-Srinagar Highway

Reports pouring in from Gulmarg suggest that it is snowing heavily. The tourist destination too has seen little snowfall so far this winter. The change in weather is expected to pull more tourists to the spot.

“Srinagar city and adjoining areas are expected to witness rainfall and light snow tonight,” Sonam Lotus, Director Met Department told Kashmir Life.

The snowfall is expected to raise the temperature by few notches. The intense cold wave amidst dry weather sweeping across the valley has lead to viral infection which has become widespread. Long queues of patients are seen lined up at the Chest disease hospital from past many weeks.
