SRINAGAR: For the first time, a rare Parapharyngeal tumour surgery was successfully performed by doctors at the government medical college in Anantnag on a patient who had been diagnosed with this unusual condition.

One of the doctors involved in the procedure noted that the surgery was performed on a 29-year-old patient at GMC Anantnag.

According to him, a team of doctors led by Dr. Amir Yousuf in the department of ENT-HNS at GMC Anantnag conducted the patient’s surgery

“The case was evaluated and CT tumour mapping was done with the able guidance of senior Radiologists Dr Owais H Dar and Dr Saika Shafi and with able team of anaesthesiologists led by Dr Anjum Shamim.”

He mentioned that the surgical team successfully removed a 5 cm tumor using a transcervical approach, with less than 10 ml of blood loss during the procedure. Currently, the patient is recovering well in the post-operative period.

In addition, Senior Consultant Radiologist, Dr. Owais H Dar, explained that parapharyngeal tumors are a rare and challenging diagnosis due to the presence of major vessels and nerves around the affected area, which can make surgical treatment difficult.

According to him, para pharyngeal tumors make up only about 0.5% of all head and neck tumors.

Moreover, he mentioned that the ENT department, led by Prof. Dr. Sajad M Qazi, is now routinely performing advanced ENT-HNS surgeries. (KNO)
