SRINAGAR: District Kupwara has established its first-ever Trout Feed Mill under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to strengthen the fisheries sector and promote sustainable aquaculture. The project, valued at Rs 30 lakh, has been supported by a Rs 12 lakh subsidy from the government, underscoring a commitment to empowering local fish farmers, a DIPR statement said.

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, formally handed over the cheque for the subsidy to the beneficiary fish farmer in the presence of the Assistant Director Fisheries Kupwara. This initiative is expected to revolutionise trout farming in the district by ensuring the availability of high-quality feed, a critical factor in enhancing productivity and fish quality.
The establishment of the mill aligns with the PMMSY’s broader objectives of bolstering the fisheries and aquaculture sectors nationwide. By fostering food security, creating employment opportunities, and increasing fish farmers’ incomes, the scheme is transforming livelihoods across the country.
The new Trout Feed Mill is poised to drive growth in Kupwara’s fisheries industry, which is a key economic activity in the region. Local officials are optimistic that the initiative will lead to increased trout production, improved fish quality, and better earnings for fish farmers.
