Five Family Members Die of Suffocation in Srinagar: Police

   

SRINAGAR: In a tragic incident, five members of a family, including a one-month-old infant and an 18-month-old boy, died due to suffocation in the Pandrathan area of Srinagar on Sunday evening, officials said.

A senior police official said that the five family members, who were living in rented accommodation in Pandrathan, died late at night after falling unconscious due to suffocation.

The official added that the family, originally from Baramulla, had been residing in a rented house in Pandrathan. “They were shifted to the hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead on arrival,” he said.

The victims were identified as Ajaz Ahmad Bhat (38), his wife Saleema (32), and their three children—Areeb (3), Hamza (18 months), and a one-month-old infant boy.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound grief and sorrow over the tragic deaths of the five family members. He conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved relatives and prayed for strength and patience to help them cope with this irreparable loss.

As the bodies of all five family members arrived in Pandrathan, wails and cries filled the air, with sorrow enveloping the entire area, leaving residents in shock.

In his message, the Chief Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving relatives, praying for their strength and patience to endure this irreparable loss. While offering prayers for the departed souls, he urged the public to exercise extreme caution when using heating devices during the harsh winter months. He emphasised the need to follow government-issued advisories on the safe use of such equipment to prevent similar tragedies.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed sorrow over the incident. In his condolence message, he said, “Saddened by the loss of precious lives in a tragic incident in Srinagar. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”
