SRINAGAR: A five-year-old girl succumbed to severe injuries after allegedly being thrown off a bridge over the Jhelum River by her mentally ill aunt. The child, a primary school student, passed away at the Super Speciality Hospital, three days after the harrowing incident.
Eyewitnesses recounted the shocking scene, stating that the aunt hurled the child from the footbridge in the Abi Guzar area. Instead of landing in the river, the child struck a concrete pier, sustaining critical injuries.
Local residents rushed to rescue the unconscious and profusely bleeding child while restraining the aunt, who had attempted to flee.
Medical Superintendent Dr Tasneem Showkat confirmed the child’s admission and surgery at SMHS Hospital before her transfer to the Super Speciality Hospital.
Dr Rubina Shaheen stated that the child was brought in an unconscious state with polytrauma injuries. Despite extensive medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case at the Kothi Bagh Police Station and taken the aunt into custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the aunt suffers from depression and other mental health issues, necessitating a psychiatric evaluation. [KNT]
