Locals said that floodwaters gushed into residential areas early Wednesday morning after what they described as a cloudburst in the upper reaches of Dachigam. The sudden flow submerged several houses, lanes and the main road, forcing families to move belongings to higher ground.

“Water entered our homes within minutes. We could do little except rush to protect children and elderly members,” said a local from Khushipora, adding that repeated requests for preventive measures in the area had gone unheeded.

The flooding disrupted normal movement in the locality, with waterlogged lanes making it difficult for people to step out. Many households reported damage to household goods stored on ground floors.

Officials from the district administration and Irrigation and Flood Control Department said that teams have been sent to the area to assess the situation and initiate remedial action.

Locals have urged authorities to strengthen embankments and carry out permanent repairs to the flood channel to avoid a repeat of such incidents in future. [KNT]
