SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party MLA from Tral, Rafiq Naik, on Tuesday urged legislators to focus on public service and have faith in God rather than depending solely on security arrangements, amid ongoing concerns over the withdrawal or reduction of security cover for some lawmakers.
Speaking during Assembly discussions, Naik said elected representatives are meant to serve the public and should not become overly reliant on personal protection. He emphasised that their legacy would be defined by their work for the people.
He said, “Do good work and trust in Allah. We are here for the people. Even if something happens, we will be remembered for our work.”
The remarks came as several legislators raised concerns that their security cover had been reduced or withdrawn, triggering debate in the House over safety arrangements for elected representatives.
Highlighting that security cannot be the only safeguard, Naik referred to past incidents, including the killing of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh inside the Secretariat, to underline his point that protective measures alone do not ensure complete safety.
