A massive fire broke out in a forest compartment at  Gujjarpati Zaloora village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday evening.

Locals said the fire which erupted on today at 3 pm in compartment number 23 is spreading to more areas causing huge damage to the green gold.

“The raging flames could be seen from a distance in the forest,” said Ghulam Ahmad Lone Sarpanch Zaloora B.

He said the fire has engulfed a large area of forest compartment 23. “A large number of trees are feared to have suffered damage.”

He added that this is the first time that a massive fire has rages out in the forests of this area, which connects Sopore with Kupwara range.

An official told Kashmir Life that the forest men are on job to douse the flames and prevent it from spreading further.
