SRINAGAR: Former president of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, Maulana Mohammad Abdullah Tari, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was around 86.

Tari served the District Institute of Education (DIE) as a trainer, and teachers and post-retirement remained busy with religious activities. Family sources said Tari had been suffering from senile dementia for some time. Before emerging as a religious figure, he served as a teacher.
Born in 1939, Maulana Tari was the son of Molvi Abdul Hamid and hailed from the Shopian area. He remained associated with religious and socio-religious activities for several decades and also served as an aide to separatist leader Shabir Shah.
He served as president of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith from 1986 to 1989.
Maulana Tari is survived by his son, Dr Attaullah, a veterinary doctor, and a daughter. The family resides in Aliyalpora.
