SRINAGAR: At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded in western Iran, state media reported.
According to IRNA, the tanker collided with several vehicles before catching fire near a traffic police station close to Sanandaj, a Kurdish city located around 400 kilometres (248 miles) west of Tehran.
The report said a faulty braking system was believed to have caused the accident.
The injured were shifted to hospitals for treatment.
A similar accident near Sanandaj in 2018, involving a fuel tanker and an intercity passenger bus, left 15 people dead and four injured.
Iran records more than 17,000 deaths from road and traffic accidents every year. Experts have attributed the high fatality rate to unsafe vehicles, violations of traffic rules and inadequate emergency services.
