Hundreds of people attended the funeral procession of a slain militant Mohammed Iqbal Ganie at his native village Nowpora, Dooru in Anantnag district on Saturday.

As per state police he was affiliated with the militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and was killed in the encounter that started today early morning in the forest area of the Nowgam area of Dooru.

A police spokesman said that following a credible input, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police and army in forest area of Nowgam in Dooru. During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party, which retaliated leading to an encounter.

In the ensuing encounter, he said, one militant was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of encounter along with arms and ammunition.

According to the police records, he was affiliated with JeM and had a long history of “crime records”.

“He was wanted by law for his complicity in a series of terror crimes. He was part of groups involved in planning and executing series of militant attacks in the area. Many crime cases were registered against him,” reads the statement.

After conducting all legal formalities, the body of the slain was handed over to his family for last rites. 

In wake of the operation, the authorities have snapped the mobile internet in the South Kashmir.
