SRINAGAR: A wreath-laying event was held on Wednesday in District Police Lines Srinagar where tributes were paid to the slain Altaf Hussian resident of Ganderpora Eidgah who was killed during an attack on BJP activist at Nunar village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

A police spokesman in a statement said that on October 6, evening a political worker was fired upon by militants at his village Nunar Ganderbal when he was going to his safe cluster accompanied by his PSO Ct Altaf Hussain at Kangan after spending the day with his family.

“The attack was retaliated by his PSO and the militant involved was killed by PSO. The PSO too was injured in the fire. Injured PSO was brought to a Srinagar hospital where he succumbed. The militant was identified as Shabir of Pulwama,” said the spokesman.

DGP Dilbag Singh said that slain militant was right-hand man and worked as OGW of Riyaz Naikoo, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander who was killed on May 6 this year near his native village in Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

“(Shabir) was right-hand OGW of Riyaz Naikoo for a long and came into active militant later. He had recently joined active militancy. He was sent for target hitting by Hizb,” the DGP said.

To a question how security establishment sees the attack in Ganderbal considered to be a peace district and how the militant was able to move to the spot, the DGP said: “For a militant, the entire area is open. He can move from any place. He works on the dictation of Pakistan.”

An official said that civil and  Police Officers led by Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the slain cop.

“Among others who paid floral tributes to the slain include ADGP Coordination Javid Mujtaba Geelani-IPS, ADGP Headquarters/L&O A.G.Mir-IPS, ADGP CID R.R. Swain-IPS, ADGP Armed A.K.Chaudary-IPS, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar-IPS, IG CRPF (OPS) Deepak Rattan/ DIG CRPF (OPS), Ashok Shamiyal,  SSP Srinagar Dr M Haseeb Muhgal-JKPS, DC Ganderbal Shafqat Iqbal-KPS, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal, Colonel Aditya Singh 15 Core and other officers and jawans of the police, army and CRPF,” he said.

Meanwhile, later on, the body of the slain cop was handed over to his family for last rites with salutary respect.

As soon body reached the native area of slain cops, hundreds of people including relatives attended the funeral procession.

Amid sobs Altaf was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard, reports said.

Altaf Hussain had joined the police department in the year 2011 and was posted with the protected person from last three months. He is survived by parents, wife and one and years old son.
