SRINAGAR: Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten 223 as India chased down 406 against the West Indies in 43.3 overs to register their highest successful ODI run chase in the second match of the three-game series in Guwahati on Wednesday.
Gill completed his double century from 117 balls, making it the fastest 200 in ODI cricket. He also recorded the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain and the highest individual score by an Indian in a successful ODI chase.
Rohit Sharma provided the early momentum, scoring 101 from 72 balls as he and Gill put on 255 for the opening wicket. Rohit’s century also took him past 12,000 runs in ODIs.
Gill continued the chase after Rohit’s dismissal, remaining unbeaten on 223 from 133 deliveries as India reached 410 for two with 39 balls to spare.
The West Indies had earlier posted 405 for seven in their 50 overs after Gill won the toss and chose to field.
John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries. Campbell reached his hundred from 65 balls, the fastest ODI century by a West Indies batter against India. Hope made 104 from 94 balls, while Jangoo scored 114 from 77, reaching his century in 70 deliveries.
The three centuries contributed to only the sixth instance in ODI cricket of three batters making hundreds in the same innings.
For India, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each. Kuldeep also completed 200 career ODI wickets.
India’s eight-wicket victory came with 39 balls remaining.
