SRINAGAR: The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has got the distinction of becoming the first Medical College in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir to successfully perform three live kidney transplants.
While the first two kidney transplants were performed on April 30, third one was done on May 1. In the first case, the kidney of a mother was successfully transplanted to her 27-year-old son, a resident of Kishtwar. In the second case, the kidney of woman was transplanted to her 36-year-old daughter, a resident of Doda while in the third case, the kidney of a woman was transplanted to her 60-year-old husband, a resident of Jammu.
All recipients were the cases of Chronic Kidney Disease on dialysis. After the family members came forward to donate their kidneys, the transplantation was carried out after completing all the legal formalities. The procedure was carried out totally free under Ayushman Bharat Sehat Scheme, the newspaper Daily Excelsior quoted a spokesperson of GMC Jammu as having said. He said all three patients were under the observation of doctors and today two of them were discharged from the Hospital.
On this achievement, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha today congratulated the team of doctors of GMC Jammu who performed the kidney transplants successfully. “GMC,#Jammu has become the first medical college in the UT to successfully perform #kidney transplant. Commenting on the achievement, Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma said this is the first time that a Kidney Transplant has been done in a Medical College in the UT and with this the GMC Jammu has become one of the very few Medical Colleges in the country where Kidney Transplant is done. She said that it was possible because of the support from the Administrative Department and through coordinated efforts by the Departments of Urology, Nephrology, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Blood Bank, Radiology, besides Medical Superintendent and Deputy Medical Superintendent of Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) Jammu.
Dr Shashi also informed that donor nephrectomy was done laparoscopically and all the kidney donors were discharged on the 5th postoperative day and out of the 3 recipients, 2 were discharged today.
Head, Department Urology, Dr Elias Sharma said that due to the transplant team’s efforts, the transplantation procedure went smoothly and the department is also ready to take up cadaver transplants in near future. He said for this, patients would have to register themselves with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K in Super Speciality Hospital Jammu.
Besides Dr Elias Sharma, other members in the transplantation team were Dr Shailesh Raina from Jaslok Hospital Mumbai and Dr Santosh Kumar from CMC Vellore as experts from outside and Dr Rahul Gupta from Urology, Dr Anjali Mehta and Dr Ashwani Kumar from Anaesthesia, and Dr Mozzain Iqbal and Dr Anchal Kotwal from Urology Department, GMC Jammu.
The Nephrology team led by Dr Raju Bhandari and Dr Aman Gupta did a commendable job including the planning, pre-transplant, transplant and post-transplant management of the patients.
