JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir government has acknowledged a shortage of faculty and paramedical staff at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and its associated hospitals, stating that efforts are underway to address the issue.

According to official data, GMC Jammu has a sanctioned faculty strength of 639, of which only 361 are currently in position, leaving 278 posts vacant. The government stated that vacancies arise due to promotions, resignations, and retirements. The referral of vacant faculty posts is under consideration, and the administration is actively working to fill them. To mitigate the staff shortage, vacant positions are being regularly filled on an arrangement basis under SO 364 of 2020, issued on November 27, 2020.
Additionally, the recruitment process for paramedical staff is under consideration to ensure that medical services are not disrupted. The government has assured that permanent appointments will be made in a phased manner to strengthen the institution’s workforce and enhance patient care at GMC Jammu and its affiliated hospitals.
