Compliant with the appeal of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for carpooling to minimize traffic congestion, the students and management of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar Saturday decided to use bicycles and carpooling in and around valley’s premier medical school.

Decision to this effect was taken in a joint meeting of the faculty and students of the college chaired by Principal Prof Kaiser Ahmad, an official spokesperson said this evening.

The meeting decided that the students of the College would start using bicycles voluntarily for coming to college and similarly possibility of area wise carpooling would be explored with the connection of a database of car owners from the college in each area.

The meeting also decided to approach SRTC for lending few buses to the college for ferrying students and staff, thereby minimizing the use of individual vehicles.

The meeting observed that this gesture will not only help in clearing the college space from vehicle congestion but also contribute in lessening traffic presence in the Srinagar City.

It may be recalled that the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti while chairing a review meeting on City’s traffic management had appealed people to minimize use of individual vehicles and instead prefer carpooling.

HoDs of the college, faculty members and representatives of students attended the meeting.
