Expressing anguish over the manner in which execution of Afzal Guru was carried out in Tihar jail, president Awami National Conference (ANC) Khalida shah said that the decision of denying body to family has lacerated the family ‘s sentiment immensely.

“Nothing could be more insensitive and inhuman then to deny his family one last chance to meet him before his execution,” she mentione in her letter addressed to president of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

“The hanging has delivered a huge set back to the painstaking process of normalization. The trust deficit between people of Kashmir with Government of India (GoI) and agencies has almost reached a point of no return,” she added.

In her appeal to President of India, she writes that government should concede to request of family for performing last rites of Guru according to religion and have his decent burial.

“The state has no authority or moral right to withhold the corpse of the hanged person and can’t deny his family to perform religious duties and rituals which are part of his faith and should be given the right to perform his religious rights as envisaged in the fundamental right s and international governance by all standards of morality.

Accusing GoI of making mockery of chief minister Omar Abdullah, Khalida said, “GoI has rendered the office of the Chief Minister into nullity.”
