Authorities Monday prevented Hurriyat Conference (g) from holding a Seerat Conference at its Hyderpora office here.

A huge contingent of policemen deployed at the entry of a lane leading towards Hurriyat (g) headquarters-cum-residence of its chairperson Syed Ali Shah Geelani, prevented participants from moving ahead.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chief Yasin Malik was also disallowed to participate in the Seerat Conference.

A JKLF spokesman said that Malik had reached outside the residence of Geelani, but a police party deployed outside prevented him from moving inside.

Hurriyat (m) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who was also expected to participate in the conference, has been detained at his residence.

A spokesperson of Hurriyat while talking to Kashmir Life said, “We had invited intellectuals and religious scholars for the Conference but authorities didn’t allow the invitees to reach the venue.”

“There was no law and order issue involved or apprehensions about the same, but the authorities without any reason and logic stopped us from organising the Seerat Conference. They even prevented the regular staff members of the amalgam from discharging their duties,” he said. “It an act of “frustration”.

Meanwhile, a member of Jama’at-e-Islami, who was representing Ameer-e-Jama’at in the Seerat Conference was also barred from entering the venue.

“I had sent a representative to attend the conference, but he was sent back by a contingent of police deployed outside the residence of Geelani sb,” Ghulam Muhammad Bhat, Ameer-e-Jama’at told Kashmir Life.

The spokesperson of Hurriyat said that Bar Association chairman, Mian Abdul Qayoom was also denied entry into the venue.

When called to confirm the ‘foiling of Seerat Conference’, SHO, Humhama Police Station, dropped the call twice without commenting.

Later in the evening, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu Kashmir, on Monday strongly condemned state administration for laying curbs on proposed Seerat Conference at Hyderpora. It termed the ban on simple religious function “sheer frustration and highhandedness” of the government.

The party spokesman said it had extended an open invitation to religious clerics and intellectuals and the programme was open and not concealed but the government, despite their tall claims about freedom for expression and democracy, disallowed the function “out of vengeance”.

“There was no threat to law and order situation,” the spokesman said. He criticized administration for their dubious nature and double speak, saying “on one hand they felicitate people on this auspicious occasion and on the other hand they restrict religious clerics and intellectuals from participating in religious seminars.”

During Amaranth Yatra, he said, the government provides every facility and even arrange for boarding and lodging but on the other hand it restricts a simple function of Seerat Conference. “Even RSS activists are permitted to carry their activities and during their parade they even exhibit weaponry and thus harass Muslim and minorities communities but PDP led administration never prohibit their activities and instead act as mute spectators,” the spokesman added, terming the ruling party “double-dealers” worked with the sole aim to “appease their Zafrani masters in Delhi”.

High Court Bar Association also condemns the police action in not allowing Tehreek-Hurriyat-i-Jammu Kashmir to hold a Seerat Conference.

“Everywhere in the World, Muslims are allowed to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad SAW, but it is only in Kashmir that the ruthless forces and their masters have not allowed the holding of such a conference at Hyderpora Srinagar, which is a direct interference in the religious affairs of the people of Kashmir and as such it should be condemned by one and all,” Bar said in a statement.

It requests the world community and more particularly the Muslim Ummah to take notice of these events in Kashmir and expose India and its stooges in Kashmir before the people of the world.
