SRINAGAR

With suspense over government formation continuing in the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, who was scheduled to return to Srinagar Thursday, has deferred her programme for some days.

Sources told KNS that Mehbooba, who was in New Delhi to attend the Parliament session, was scheduled to return today. “However, she (Mehbooba) deferred the programme as in next few days Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet her to discuss the government formation,” they said.

Sources said that the PDP chief met a top BJP leader today forenoon to discuss the new confidence building measures she has consistently been demanding from the central government.

Mehbooba has repeatedly said that she was not power-hungry but has been seeking CBMs “for the welfare and the dignity of the people of the state”.

The first part of the Budget Session of Parliament came to end on Wednesday evening. “There is likelihood that Mehbooba will meet Modi within this week only which has raised the hopes of ice melting between the PDP and the BJP.”

The state is under Governor’s Rule since January 8 a day after the then Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, passed away at AIIMS in New Delhi following a brief illness. The PDP and the BJP have failed to re-stitch an alliance since then.

However, since last four days several developments indicated that PDP and BJP are warming up to revive the government which ceased to exist following Mufti death.

PDP has been insisting that the Union Government should announce some confidence building measures (CBMs) to give new government a fillip before forming the government.
