National Conference on Saturday lashed out at the PDP-BJP Government for unleashing a wave of indiscriminate persecution in South Kashmir and said the Government was deliberately punishing the people of South Kashmri en-mass for the current unrest, NC lawmakers Abdul Majeed Larmi, Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri said in a joint statement.

“Situation in Homshalibug, Bijbehara and Kulgam is extremely alarming and was further deteriorating because of the Government’s ruthless and vindictive approach,” the statement said.

NC legislators expressed solidarity with the family of the slain civilian Arif Ahmed Shah of Gund Baba, Sangam and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the lawmakers said the innocent civilian was shot dead without any provocation and this was yet another instance of the Government giving a tacit approval to a barbaric approach in handling the political unrest.

“Scores of innocent civilians have sustained grievous injuries in various areas as there has been a ruthless assault targeted at civilians and the saddest thing is that this is happening under the nose of the administration. There is absolutely no sense of responsibility or restraint as the indiscriminate assault on civilians continues unabated. It seems like Mehbooba Mufti has passed clear directions that people in South Kashmir should be persecuted based on their widespread resentment for the opportunistic PDP-BJP Government”, the NC Legislators further added in the statement.

Demanding a time-bound judicial probe into all civilian killings including the killing in Dooru, Kulgam and Sangam, the NC Legislators said the State Government was shying away from submitting itself to judicial scrutiny for the loss of almost a hundred young lives over the course of the previous more than four months.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, NC said the desperation of the Chief Minister and her Ministers to lay foundation stones had now crossed all levels of ridiculousness when today the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the Cable Car Corporation building in the premises of the Bemina Woolen Mills in Srinagar. NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani said the Chief Minister upon finding the land earmarked for the new building waterlogged chose to lay the foundation stone in the premises of the Bemina Woollen Mills instead.

“What can be more ridiculous and can the Chief Minister get any more desperate to lay foundation stones and undertake photo-ops to portray that her Government continues to exist beyond a mere technicality. The CM couldn’t wait for the land to be dewatered and chose instead to lay the foundation stone in the Bemina Woolen Mills premises. In addition to this, lately there have been numerous instances of old foundation stones being illegally and obnoxiously vandalized and demolished so that new foundation stones can be laid by Mehbooba Ji’s Ministers for works and projects that are already underway and were initiated in the tenure of the previous Government. Today Mehbooba Ji’s foundation stone surrogacy in Srinagar has been the icing on the cake”, Sogami said while speaking to reporters at Party Headquarters in Srinagar.

Sogami said the Chief Minister rather than working towards the goal of restoring sustainable peace and calm was pre-occupied with her photo-ops and propaganda antics to convey a false sense of normalcy. “The PDP-BJP Government has ceased to exist on the ground long back and essential services have become a luxury. All important departments have been rendered defunct and no amount of foundation stones can mislead the public. This Government has proven to be a complete and utter failure and this failure has been led from the front by the Chief Minister herself”, Nasir Aslam Wani added.

“Mehbooba Ji’s Government has gone from a phase of arrogance earlier to a phase of irrelevance now. First they stopped work on all projects and developmental works initiated during the tenure of Mr. Omar Abdullah and now – given her abject performance as the CM – it seems she has directed her Ministers to usurp old foundation stones and replace them with new ones in an effort to project that as development. Apparently the Administration has been directed to discover opportunities for the Chief Minister to cut ribbons and lay foundation stones. If they fail to discover opportunities, it is clear they have been asked to invent them”, the NC Spokesperson further said.
