Srinagar: Governor Satya Pal Malik, Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, on Thursday chaired 80th meeting of the University Council, held here at the Raj Bhavan.

At the outset, the Council congratulated Professor Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, faculty and students for improving the University ranking from Grade A to A+ in NAAC Accreditation. The Governor also complimented the University authorities for securing the 53rd rank amongst the Universities, the topmost in the State and 79th in the overall ranking among 3500 institutions under NIRF Ranking-2019.

“It’s a matter of pride for all of us and particularly for the academicians and students’ community as the Kashmir University has achieved an important milestone” the Governor observed.

The Governor advised the University authorities to fully utilise the available Information & Communications Technology (ICT) based teaching tools and making  optimum utilisation of programmes, which would connect the students and faculty to the best available online educational resource platforms. He also urged for stepping up efforts in furthering research programmes on varied subjects with special focus on latest innovations.

The Council was informed that the Government has approved two chairs, one each for Kashmir and Jammu universities along with provision of funds to the tune of Rs. 30 lakh each. The University of Kashmir will have the Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research while as the Jammu University will get Guru Nanak Dev Chair.

Professor Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor (VC), made a detailed presentation on the activities and various initiatives taken by the University. He also highlighted the technological and research breakthroughs made by the University. He focussed on the future roadmap for upgradation of various programmes and infrastructural facilities in order to create an intellectually stimulating environment and promote excellence in teaching, research and extension activities.  He stated the university has published as many as 1239 Research Journals between November 2017 and September 2019.

In order to strengthen relations and capacity building, Prof. Talat informed that a 5-member delegation of KU visited Montana Tech, Butte USA and signed a MoU with the University. The initiative will help in carrying out joint field studies on preserving water bodies (lakes) and other natural resources in Jammu and Kashmir.
