A crucial meeting of the PDP is currently underway in Srinagar to discuss government formation with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. PDP legislators are likely to announce their support for party chief Mehbooba Mufti as the state’s first woman chief minister.

Ms Mufti, hours ahead of the meeting, visited her father and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s grave in the ancestral hometown of Bijbehara in south Kashmir Islamabad district.

“Mehbooba Mufti will apprise the legislators of her party about the developments including her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week,” sources in the PDP told news gathering agency.

Scores of media personnel are waiting outside the Fairview residence of Mehbooba Mufti at Gupkar to break any new development viz-a-viz government formation.

The BJP on Wednesday had asserted that PDP had not made any special demand, adding Ms Mufti’s party has to make the next move for government formation.

BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav’s assertion came a day after Ms Mufti’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi which she had termed as “very positive and good”, triggering speculation that their talks over government formation was back on track following months of impasse.

Meanwhile, Governor NN Vohra has written to Ms Mufti and BJP State president Sat Sharma to meet him tomorrow to clarify their stand on government formation.

PDP-BJP

Last time BJP and PDP delegations had met the Governor separately on February 2, when he had sought their stand on government formation.

The PDP-BJP coalition, after 10 months rule from March 2015 to January this year, ran into rough weather following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

He died in a hospital in Delhi on January 7 following which the state came under Governor’s rule the next day.
