The Jammu and Kashmir government has renamed the Public Health Engineering and Irrigation and Flood Control Department as ‘Jal Shakti’ department.

According to government order No. 497-JK(GAD) of 2020 issued by General Administration Department (GAD), “Sanction is hereby accorded to the renaming of Public Health Engineering/Irrigation and Flood Control Department   as “Jal Shakti Department” and its inclusion at Serial No. 27 in the First Schedule of the J&K Government Business Rules.”

“Accordingly, the sub-entries (2) & (5) appearing at Serial no. 27 (Public Works), in the First Schedule of the J&K Government Business Rules, shall stand deleted,” reads the order issued by GAD.

Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticised the name changing by calling it “a waste of time.”

Taking to social networking site Twitter, Omar wrote: “Jal Shakti Department”. Can’t improve the quality or availability of clean drinking water so let’s just waste everyone’s time by playing the name change game. Glad to see the administration taking such far-reaching decisions that will greatly improve people’s lives.”
