SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reconstituted the High-Powered Vigilance and Monitoring Committee to oversee the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in the Union Territory.
According to a government order, sanction has been accorded for the reconstitution of the committee under the chairmanship of the Lieutenant Governor. “The committee includes the Hon’ble Ministers In-Charge of the Finance and Social Welfare Departments, Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly from SC/ST categories, the Chief Secretary, Administrative Secretaries of the Home and Social Welfare Departments, and the Director General of Police, J&K. A Director or Deputy Director from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will also be part of the panel,” it reads.
The Administrative Secretary of the Social Welfare Department has been designated as the Convener of the committee.
As per the order, the committee shall meet at least twice a year, in January and July, to review the implementation of the Act, rehabilitation of victims, prosecution of cases under the Act, and the roles of various officers and agencies. It will also review reports submitted by the UT Government on these matters. (JKNS)
