SRINAGAR: The Jammu Kashmir government will provide five marlas of land on lease to each landless family affected by the recent weather calamity, Minister Sakina Itoo announced in the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Responding to a question raised by MLA Shyam Lal Sharma—presented on his behalf by Pawan Gupta during the ongoing Assembly session—Itoo said the measure aims to provide immediate relief to families rendered homeless due to severe weather-related damage.
Pawan Gupta, highlighting the plight of the affected families, questioned the absence of a comprehensive policy to address homelessness. He said that nearly 9,000 families in Udhampur district alone were without shelter and urged the government to allot state land to such families on a priority basis.
In his response, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah stated that no new policy would be introduced at this stage, arguing that existing mechanisms were sufficient. “We have already submitted a detailed report on the losses to the Government of India,” he said, adding that funds would be distributed to affected families in Jammu once released by the Centre.
