SRINAGAR: A video posted on social media depicting the processing of garbage in Gulmarg has prompted the Municipal Committee to issue a response, clarifying the waste management practices in the area.

The committee emphasises that waste management falls under its jurisdiction in accordance with the Waste Management Rules.

According to the Municipal Committee, Gulmarg has a state-of-the-art 3 MT Solid Waste Treatment Plant located far away from tourist areas. The plant follows scientific guidelines for the proper treatment of solid waste. A dedicated fenced dumping yard, situated within the plant’s premises, is used for the segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

Although efforts are made to prevent waste from spreading beyond the fenced area, occasional instances occur when wild animals breach the fence, leading to the dispersal of a small quantity of waste. However, the committee ensures that such waste is promptly retrieved and processed. To enhance operational efficiency, the maintenance and operation of the waste treatment plant have been outsourced.

During winter months, the extreme cold temperatures affect the waste processing speed, resulting in a surplus of waste. To address this challenge, the excess waste is transported to an alternative dumping site where it undergoes scientific processing. In addition, the establishment of another waste treatment plant is currently under consideration, with the Deputy Commissioner already forming a committee for this purpose.

In a positive development, the Gulmarg Gondola Project, in collaboration with the Science & Technology Park and the Central for Research in Pune, is set to inaugurate a 01 MT Solid Waste Treatment Plant. This initiative aims to further resolve the waste treatment management issue in Gulmarg.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Gulmarg Development Authority has issued the statement, assuring the public that the waste management situation is being handled efficiently
