One person was reported dead in an attack on Srinagar bypass near Silver Star Hotel late in the evening. It started with a bang and was followed by fierce gun shots.

Syed Ahfad ul Mujtaba, DIG central Kashmir said, ” four armed persons resorted to firing which resulted in  the death of one Farooq Ahmad. Another two civilians were injured in the incident, we have cordoned the area and are looking for the armed person.

A senior executive of the Silver Star Hotel told Kashmir Life that a bell boy Farooq Ahmad was injured in the attack and later died.He was a resident of Tral. Police have surrounded the hotel and imposed restrictions on the overall movement on the bypass. After almost half an hour, traffic was permitted to ply on the road. Police said they are on the spot, busy collecting details. “We will tell you after we collect details,” a spokesman said. There is lot of activity on the spot as hundreds of security men are on the spot.

It is not immediately known what the target of the attack was. There are various theories around including the one that initial attack was carried out against security forces and later the attackers rushed into the hotel. Police believes that suspected militants are holed up in the hotel.

At least two civilians are reported injured in the attack. Police confirmed it identified them as Bilal Ahmad, and Anees Ahmad. Police in a statement said, “Militants entered in Hotel Silver Star situated on Nowgam Bypass, Srinagar at around 4:30 this afternoon and fired indiscriminately killing one person Farooq Ahmad and injuring two Anees and Bilal”.

So far no militant outfit has staked any claim.
