After, ruling National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah stating that Afzal Guru’s hanging was “unjustified”, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz on Wednesday said that it was an irony of fate that the same judicial system reduced the death sentence of Late Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins which earlier failed to do justice in Mohammad Afzal Guru’s case.

Soz that there is a hurt feeling among the people of Jammu and Kashmir especially in Kashmir as Guru did not receive a fair trial.  He said that no political party in the country should make it a political issue. “Guru’s family is poor and that is why it could not approach the Supreme Court very immediately after the decision was known two days before his execution. Unfortunately, the supreme court did not have a final word on Guru’s case,” Soz said.

The PCC chief said that government of India and the Jammu and Kashmir government should now compensate Guru’s family proportionally to what it has lost. “Now it is for the two governments to compensate the family commensurate with their sentiments,” Soz said. (KNS)
