SRINAGAR: The dream of performing Hajj seems out of reach for many in Jammu and Kashmir this year, with a significant drop in applications attributed to skyrocketing pilgrimage costs.

Just 7,000 have applied for the 11,500 slots allotted to the region, a stark contrast to the 14,200 applications received last year.

“The overarching factor is the inflation affecting the affordability of the pilgrimage,” lamented an aspiring pilgrim, echoing the sentiment of many who are turning to the cheaper alternative of Umrah instead.

Recognising the financial strain, authorities are urging applicants to consider embarking from Delhi or Mumbai, where the journey is expected to be lighter on the wallet compared to Srinagar. Additionally, the application process has been made free since last year to ease the burden.

“This initiative helps those who may need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances or those not selected through the lottery system,” sources said.

The decline in applications is not new. Between 2015 and 2017, a much higher number applied (25,000 to 30,000), but only around 11,000 set foot in Mecca. This highlights the need for measures to ensure genuine interest and streamline the pilgrimage process.

Despite the current slump, a glimmer of hope remains. 441 applications have been received under the reserved category for senior citizens, and 44 women have registered to embark with a male guardian.

With the application window closing on January 15, the Hajj Committee J&K remains optimistic that the combined benefits of free applications and alternative embarkation points will entice more applicants, promoting a more inclusive participation in this sacred obligation. (KNS)
