Police Friday foiled proposed rally of Hurriyat Conference (m) Chairperson by detaining scores of youth and activists near University of Kashmir’s Sir Syed gate at Hazratbal.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for a rally today against the Handwara civilian killings. However, Mirwaiz was put under house arrest soon after the call.

Mirwaiz leads Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid, however, authorities disallowed people to offer the mandatory congregational prayers today by imposing severe restrictions in Old Srinagar.

Hurriyat Conference (m) spokesperson, Shahid Ul Islam told Kashmir Life over phone that scores of youth were arrested by police near Hazratbal. “People on way to residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at Nigeen but they were disallowed by forces deployed outside University (of Kashmir) gate,” he said.

“Around 16 to 18 people have arrested by cops and whisked away in police vans,” he said. Mirwaiz was scheduled to lead the rally against the civilian killings, he said.
