After Indian army lost its Colonel a few days ago in fight with militants, heavy search operation is under way to nab the armed guerrillas.

Colonel Santosh Mahadik, the Commanding Officer (CO) of 41 Rashtriya Rifles was killed in an encounter with militants.

Reports reaching here said that the army launched a massive search operation in Rajwar forest area of Handwara falling in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district after brief gunfire with militants last night.

A joint team of army’s 21 RR and 9 PARA had cordoned off the Bhawan village in Rajwar area of Handwara last night.

“As they moved forward, the militants hiding in the area opened fire which was retaliated, triggering heavy exchange of fire which continued for about half an hour. However, the militants escaped from the site after taking advantage of the darkness,” reports quoting officials said.
