SRINAGAR: Heated exchanges took place in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution seeking restoration of full statehood referred to an earlier resolution on autonomy passed by the erstwhile Assembly in 2000.
The resolution moved by Abdullah calls for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, while referring to resolutions passed by the House on June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024. It also proposes that the resolution be forwarded to the Government of India.
The reference to the 2000 resolution drew objections from BJP members, who questioned the inclusion of an autonomy-related resolution in a measure concerning restoration of statehood. BJP members also raised slogans including “Desh Virodhi Nahi Chalegi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
National Conference members defended the reference, maintaining that the party would continue to pursue what it regards as the rights of Jammu and Kashmir. NC members also raised the slogan, “Jis Kashmir ko khoon se seencha, woh Kashmir hamara hai.”
The National Conference had included implementation of the 2000 autonomy resolution among its political commitments in its 2024 Assembly election manifesto.
The autonomy resolution, passed by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on June 26, 2000, had sought greater autonomy for the then State and was subsequently discussed in Parliament.
