SRINAGAR:   Director Horticulture Kashmir Ajaz Ahmad Bhat has said the government has set the target of converting 10,000 hectors into high-density apple plantation, this year. An official spokesman said he revealed it in a review meeting.

He directed the concerned officers to speed up the development works to achieve targets within a given time frame and to ensure judicious use of the fund.

The meeting also discussed the matter regarding Nursery Development Plan for production of quality plant material was. The director impressed upon Chief Horticulture officers to submit a plan in this regard immediately so that funds are arranged well in time.

It was given out in the meeting that 10,000 hectares have been earmarked for the establishment of ultra-high-density orchards with the help of the hi-tech farming system, besides propagating desired plant material locally with the multiplication of clonal rootstock.

The meeting was also informed that for the propagation of 3.50 crore fruit plants about 4.00 crore root stocks will be propagated in the public and private sector nurseries.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Horticulture officers and other concerned.
