SRINAGAR

With heavy rain and snowfall continuing, the 294-km-long Srinagar-Jammu Highway was closed for vehicular traffic on Thursday.

Inspector General Police (IGP) Traffic Muneer Khan told KNS that fresh movement of traffic on the Highway was stopped in the wake of heavy rains and snowfall. “On Thursday the traffic was to ply from Jammu to Srinagar but due to landslides near Panthal and Gamru the Highway was closed for traffic. However, in the morning 700 vehicles crossed Jawahar Tunnel and they were on way to Srinagar,” he said.

He said nearly 2000 vehicles were stranded on the Highway at various places, “As a precautionary measure these vehicles were not allowed to move forward. Beacon has started to clear the Highway but on Friday the road will remain closed.”

Meanwhile, several flights were cancelled on Thursday at Srinagar Airport due to bad weather conditions
