An encounter between militants and forces in Reban village of Sopore town in northern part of Kashmir has ended with the killing of a Hizb ul Mujahideen commander on Saturday, police said.

Reports quoting officials said that an operation that began around 3 am in the village has ended. “One Hizb militant, identified as Shahid Ahmad Sheikh of Kachloo Rafiabad has been killed,” he said.

Sheikh is believed to have been the District Commander of the Hizb ul Mujahideen outfit.

Local sources said that a residential house in which the militant was trapped has been razed to ground by forces during the gunfight.
