SRINAGAR: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday accused certain “bigots” of turning Holi celebrations into a “source of fear” for minorities, allegedly with the backing of those in power.

Her remarks came a day after she warned that fuelling divisions between Hindus and Muslims could have “dangerous consequences” for the country.
Mufti was reacting to the ongoing controversy surrounding the coincidence of Holi celebrations and the ‘Jumma namaaz’ of Ramzan on the same day.
In a post on X, she wrote, “Holi, for me, has always represented India’s Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. I fondly recall eagerly looking forward to the festival and celebrating it with my Hindu friends with great joy and enthusiasm. However, some bigots have now transformed this celebration into a source of fear for minorities, with the tacit approval of those in power. It is time for India to wake up. Wishing everyone a Happy Holi!”
On Thursday, the PDP leader alleged that the country’s atmosphere was being poisoned, with efforts to pit Hindus against Muslims.
This year, Holi coincides with the second Friday of Ramzan, prompting several cities to heighten security measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
