SRINAGAR: In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a fire that ravaged the Jamalata area of Nawa Kadal in Srinagar took the life of a handicapped homeowner who was tragically trapped in the upper story of his residence. Officials revealed that the homeowner, identified as Bashir Ahmad Banday, son of Mohammad Yousuf Banday, was caught in the inferno, with rescue efforts initiated only after a last-minute alert.

According to officials, the distress call informing them of the situation came at a critical juncture, delaying the rescue operation. By the time responders reached the scene, the fire had already intensified, complicating the evacuation process. Despite the deployment of an impressive fleet of 12 fire tenders to combat the blaze, the handicapped homeowner remained trapped for an extended period.

Reports indicate that rescue teams located Bashir Ahmad Banday on the upper floor of his house, significantly later than desired. Subsequently, he was swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he was declared deceased upon arrival.

Authorities said they are investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the sequence of events.

This is the second consecutive day that a fire was reported from Srinagar city. Yesterday evening, a house was razed to the ground in the Hawal area. Today, three houses suffered extensive damage in the Jamalata area.
