Paying glowing tributes to the martyrs of January 25, 1990 Handwara massacre, Hurriyat Conference (m) Sunday said 26 years ago on this day, forces, who had been given a free hand to commit gravest of atrocities in Kashmir, opened fire at unarmed civilian protestors in Handwara, martyring 21 and injuring around 150.

“Thereafter in the following days strict curfew and restrictions were imposed in the whole town for several days and excesses at large scale were committed on the civilian population,” spokesperson of the Hurriyat amalgam said in a statement issued this evening.

Hurriyat (m) Spokesperson said that neither any forces personnel was held responsible nor the incident was investigated till this day.

“Massacre of Handwara was not an isolated incident but a number of massacres took place at various places in Kashmir during the past 27 years and the Indian forces were involved in killing of tens of thousands of Kashmiris in these incidents and the probes announced in some of these incidents yielded no results but actually the guilty were given state protection and with the passing of time the probes were also mysteriously abandoned, which proves that the forces deployed in Kashmir have complete impunity for killing and indulging in gross human rights violations and get away without any punishment,” the spokesperson said.
