SRINAGAR

Terming the illegal detention of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) district president Bandipora, Rayees Ahmad Mir, for 35 days in police custody when his health condition deteriorated as “the clear violation of the constitution and the law”, Chairperson All Parties Hurriyat Conference (g) Syed Ali Geelani Saturday said that the “police are acting like a mafia group”

“Instead of a responsible institution,” Geelani said, “their behaviour with Rayees Sahab is just hooliganism.”

He expressed his deep concern over the ill health of Rayees and admitting him in a hospital in Srinagar and said, “the ill-treatment of police with the pro-freedom people in Bandipora is the result of directions of few local pro-Indian politicians of the area and these actions will have serious consequences.”

In a statement issued to the press, Geelani said, “the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district president Bandipora Rayees Ahmad Mir is among the pro-freedom leaders who were arrested a week before the Kashmir visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After that many of them were released but Rayees Sahab was continuously detained in the police station where he got very sick.”

“After many requests, Rayees Ahmad was taken to the Bandipora district hospital where he was admitted and after a thorough check up the doctors of the hospital advised him to be shifted to the state hospital Srinagar but the police ignored this advice and took him back to the police station and called his family. The police handed Rayees Ahmad Mir to his family on a condition that he should be brought back to police station after he is being discharged from the hospital,” he said.

Terming this “police action as the worst kind of state terrorism”, Geelani added, “the Hurriyat Conference has taken strong notice of this hooliganism and irresponsible attitude of the police and have formally started the documentation of this event which will be sent to the Amnesty International and other human rights organizations.” “The Hurriyat Conference has also identified the local pro-Indian politicians on whose behest the police are harassing Rayees Ahmad Mir and who are using the police force against the pro-freedom people of the area.”

Geelani cautioned that if Rayees Ahmad Mir was once again arrested after being discharged from the hospital, the Hurriyat Conference “will hold strong protest against that and this type of hooliganism will not be tolerated in anyway”.
