SRINAGAR: Police in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have detected a case of illegal timber smuggling in the Poshkar area of Kangan.
According to officials, an individual identified as Imtiaz Ahmad Banya, son of Husain Banya and a resident of Poshkar, Kangan, had illegally extracted forest timber from a nearby forest area and stored it in the courtyard of his residence.
Following the information, Police Station Kangan registered FIR No. 06/2026 under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 26 of the Indian Forest Act, and initiated an investigation.
On the directions of SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal (JKPS), a special police team conducted a search operation, leading to the recovery of illegally procured forest timber from the accused’s premises.
The seized timber was taken into possession as per legal procedure, and the accused was arrested and placed in police custody.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine the source of the timber, identify possible accomplices and uncover the wider smuggling network.
Ganderbal Police reiterated their commitment to protecting forest resources and urged the public to report illegal activities related to environmental offences.
