SRINAGAR: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a viral video allegedly showing senior IAS officer Kumar Rajeev Ranjan verbally abusing, humiliating and threatening a junior woman officer during an official review meeting in Jammu and Kashmir.
The commission’s chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, has written to the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, seeking verification of the video, an impartial inquiry and appropriate disciplinary and legal action if the allegations are established.
According to the NCW, the video allegedly shows Ranjan, Administrative Secretary of the Labour and Employment Department, addressing Beenish Wani, an Assistant Director belonging to the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS), in an abusive and threatening manner.
The commission has also called for safeguards against workplace harassment, victimisation and professional retaliation, besides seeking protection and support for the woman officer.
The NCW has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Chief Secretary within seven days.
Emphasising the need for dignity and respect in the workplace, the commission said every woman officer was entitled to a safe and dignified working environment and that abuse of authority and workplace humiliation must be addressed seriously.
The development comes amid controversy over the alleged exchange between the two officers in the video circulating on social media.
