SRINAGAR: In an inspiring turn of events on Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, 22-year-old Chander Prakash from Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir, has emerged as the first crorepati of the season. The UPSC aspirant not only won Rs 1 crore but also captured the hearts of millions with his story of perseverance and determination. He also got a car as gift.

Chander’s victory was celebrated by none other than Amitabh Bachchan, the show’s iconic host, who cheered on the young contestant as he answered the Rs 1 crore question correctly. The question that earned him the coveted prize was: “The largest city in which country is not its capital but a port with an Arabic name that means ‘abode of peace’?” Using his final lifeline, the Double Dip, Chander chose Tanzania, securing his victory.
While Chander attempted the Rs 7 crore question, which asked, “Who was the first recorded child born to English parents in North America in 1587?”, he wisely decided to quit, not wanting to risk the significant sum he had already won. However, when asked to guess, he correctly chose Virginia Dare, the right answer.
Chander’s journey to the KBC stage was far from easy. He shared his life story, revealing that he was born with a severe intestinal blockage, which required emergency surgery shortly after birth. Over the years, he has undergone seven surgeries and continues to battle health issues, with an eighth surgery on the horizon. Despite these challenges, Chander’s resolve remained unshaken, and his appearance on KBC symbolised his unrelenting spirit.
Apart from the Rs 1 crore prize, Chander was also awarded a car by the show, adding to the jubilation. Amitabh Bachchan, visibly moved by Chander’s story, embraced the young contestant on stage, saying, Gale lagjaiyyye aap humare (let’s hug). The audience erupted in applause, celebrating the achievement of a contestant who had overcome great odds to reach this milestone.
Chander’s win holds a special significance for his family, as he hopes to use the prize money to pay off a health loan and cover the costs of future medical treatment. His victory not only brings pride to his family but also shines a spotlight on his determination to continue his studies and pursue his dream of becoming a civil servant. He has majored in Economics.
As the first crorepati of KBC 16, Chander Prakash’s story is a beacon of hope, inspiring viewers across the country with his remarkable grit and determination. His win is not just a triumph of knowledge but a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Chander’s spirit and determination resonated deeply with Amitabh Bachchan, who took a moment to reflect on his father’s words: Mere babu ji ne kaha – beta, jab tak jeevan hai, tab tak sangharsh hai (My father once told me, you struggle till the day you die). These words struck a chord with Chander, who nodded in agreement, embodying this philosophy in his own life.
Throughout the show, Amitabh Bachchan shared a special rapport with Chander, recognising the contestant’s quiet resilience and intellect. As Chander spoke about the challenges he has faced, including multiple surgeries and financial struggles, Bachchan encouraged him, reminding him of the importance of perseverance and dedication. Bachchan’s heartfelt embrace after Chander’s Rs 1 crore win underscored the emotional connection between the two, with Bachchan praising Chander’s strength and determination.
Chander plans to use his winnings to repay his father’s health loan and fund his medical treatment. He also expressed his desire to support his family’s future, making the win deeply meaningful beyond personal achievement.
