SRINAGAR: In a highly debated case that eventually led to the registration of a formal police case against two managers of Presentation Convent in Jammu, the husband of the teacher has also died of Covid13. Identified as Harmeet Singh, he passé away in Jammu on Sunday, media reports said.

Singh was the husband of Convent teacher Neelu Varinder, who died early last week after contracting the infection while on duty. Her family had alleged that she was being asked by the principal of St Marry Presentation Convent and her deputy to be on duty against her wishes. The complaint led to an enquiry by the civil authorities on basis of which police registered an FIR.

If the police case is based on aiding in a pandemic death, the death of Neelu’s husband will add another offence to the case. She was a music teacher and was reporting to her duty till April 26. The school flouting the lockdown orders had invited students for a practical examination during which many students and teachers were infected.

Neelu died on May 15 after fighting for life in GMC Jammu for many days. Her last rites were performed by some of her colleagues and the volunteers from a local organisation.

Police have registered FIR No. 154/2021 under Sections 188/269/270/506 IPC, 3 Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 and 15 Disaster Management Act 2005 against Sister Hema and Sister Leema at Gandhi Nagar police station. The FIR was based on an inquiry conducted by an Executive Magistrate into reports that the Convent School Gandhi Nagar violated the Government guidelines on closure of schools due to COVID-19 and continued to call the teachers leading to infection to one of them and subsequently her death.
