Highlighting the innovation, Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, said, “Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience, enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir.”

This marks Uber’s first venture into water transport in Asia, with similar services offered in select European cities like Venice. The service currently features seven shikaras, with plans for expansion based on demand. Bookings can be made for one-hour rides accommodating up to four passengers, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., through the Uber app. Reservations are open up to 12 hours in advance and as far as 15 days ahead.

Significantly, fares are set at government-regulated rates, and Uber has waived all service charges, allowing the entire fare to go directly to the shikara drivers. Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, welcomed the move, stating, “Uber service will boost shikara operators’ business as the app will facilitate the booking of the boats at fixed rates and end bargaining, providing relief to tourists.”

Dal Lake, home to approximately 4,000 shikaras, has long been a tourist attraction, and the service is expected to attract more visitors during the winter holiday season. Uber’s integration of pre-booking features and trip insurance marks a technological upgrade for traditional rides, making them more accessible to a global audience.

The launch reflects Uber’s commitment to combining innovation with local culture, supporting the livelihoods of shikara operators while offering a unique experience for travellers in the serene landscape of Kashmir.
