Terming the increase in social crimes and social ills as an extreme cause of concern, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman and head of Mutehda Majlis-e-Ulema, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday said urgent steps were needed to counter such negative influences in the society.

Referring to the rape and murder of a girl in Pulwama, he said, “The incident was not only brutal in nature, but as a society it was a collective shame for us as we have utterly failed to stop such shocking social crimes.”

Demanding stern punishment for the culprits involved in the incident, Mirwaiz said, “Few days ago, a girl was severely injured when some youths threw acid on her face. It was a reason of shame that the culprits are still untraced. There is a need of massive social reform movement in the society.”

The Hurriyat (M) chairman said the violence against women has become a routine in Kashmir. “Women are subjected to domestic violence for different reasons like not bringing the desired dowry. It was highly unfortunate that such incidents were increasing day-after-day. Due to futile and un-Islamic rituals and extravagance, such an materialistic society was coming into existence, which could have devastating results on the Kashmiri nation,” he added.

Asserting that parents and Ulema have to play a vital role in eradicating social ills, particularly stopping violence against women, Mirwaiz said that Ulema should acts as social reformers and teach people Islamic values to help the  growth of our society in the right direction.

He demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in the acid throwing incident. Besides, he also demanded stern punishment for the culprits who were accused for committing rape and murder of a girl in Pulwama.
