SRINAGAR: India abstained from voting on a United Nations General Assembly draft resolution calling for an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
The resolution, titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine”, was adopted with 107 votes in favour, 12 against and 51 abstentions, according to official voting records.
New Delhi did not provide a detailed explanation of its abstention at the time of voting. India has previously urged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict while maintaining engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv.
The General Assembly resolution is non-binding but reflects the position of a majority of UN member states on efforts to secure a ceasefire and advance prospects for peace.
