SRINAGAR: India reported 1,59,632 new Covid-19 infections on Sunday, 12.4 per cent higher than yesterday, according to data shared by the Union Health Ministry. Of this, 3,623 cases were of the highly transmissible Omicron variant of coronavirus.

This brings the country’s cumulative caseload to 3,55,28,004. Total recoveries were at 3,44,53,603 across the country. A total of 40,863 patients recovered in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate is now at 96.98 per cent.

India’s active caseload stands at 5,90,611. In the last 24 hours, active cases increased by 1,18,442.

Among all the states, Maharashtra reported the highest Covid-19 cases at 41,434, followed by Delhi with 20,181 cases, West Bengal with 18,802 cases, Tamil Nadu with 10,978 cases and Karnataka with 8,906 cases.

These five states accounted for 62.84 per cent of the daily new cases reported on Sunday, Maharashtra alone responsible for 25.96 per cent of the new cases.

In the last 24 hours, 327 people succumbed to Covid-19, increasing the total reported death count to 4,83,790. Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (242), followed by West Bengal with 19 daily deaths.

India conducted 15,63,566 tests during the previous day, according to the Health Ministry data.

A total of 89,28,316 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 1,51,57,60,645.
